On Friday, May 5, 2006 Lucent Technologies and the Penn-Jersey chapter 132 of the New Outlook Pioneeers returned for volunteer Day 2 of the Global Days of caring.
They were like a hurricane.  So many things were happening in every room and outside all at once.
The goal is to rehabilitate the old telephone exchange building build for service in WW2 into three classrooms.
In these rooms Pioneers and InfoAge volunteers can show kids the amazing and fundamental developments in communications that are the foundation of our modern world.

During the busy day damage to front steps was repaired and new railings were made.  In classroom 2 missing ceiling lights were replaced.   New water lines were put inplace.
Repairs were made to damaged electric conduit and exposed wires were removed.  Unsafe conditions resulting from BRAC contractors incompletely removing equipment were eliminated.
Trees were trimmed.   In the Marconi hotel telephone lines were traced, a hall painted and subfloor repairs were completed.   So much was going on and so many things were done it was amazing.

The work done and the quality is unbelievable!!!

Special thanks to LRE management - John Signorello, Ken Sikorski and Vince Wieser.

Thank you for the excellent help!!

It is early morning at 9059 (center) and the New Outlook Pioneers are making things better.  Some Pioneers arrived as early as 6AM!
By the end of the day this historic building would be improved inside and out.

Removing leaves, vines and soil that allowed vines to grow in the security fence in front of the telephone exchange building on right.

....
Mike Gagliano and john Marra repair damage to front steps.  During sewer system removal and replacement careless contractors did considerable damage.

....
Before :  Ted Ficarra repairs sheetrock damaged when BRAC contractors removed light fixtures.     And, after.  Quality beyond expectation.

....
Mike Gagliano levels the ground.  Note the new steps, freshly installed.  They were made in custom forms to match the originals.   Rich Gagliano removes trimmed tree limbs he pruned.

....
Electricians remove conduit from removed equipment and wire new florescent fixtures with electronic ballast and T8 bulbs.

While most of the volunteers were working on 9059, others were helping in the Marconi Hotel.   The telephone line needed tracing and labeling.
The hall was ready for its finish coat of paint.  Calvin Cradle  and Lincoln Horton did an excellent professional job.
We needed floor underlayment repaired to be ready for our first NJHDA event which Linda DeStasio and  a carperter completed.

Frank Konow and John Marra have the new railings are nearly completed.  The Pioneers used plastic rails to make sure visiting students can not get wood splinters,

....
New lights in clssroom 2 were there was none and damaged sheetrock a few hours before.      Plumber John Schweitzer installs a new water line so the old one can be retired.

Excellent, now one more.

What an excellent day of progress.   Lynn Hatch did a good thing advocating this project and managing all the hundreds of details.
Thank you to each volunteer from Lucent Technologies and the New Outlook Pioneer for helping save Camp Evans and giving it a new future in education as New Jersey's WWII Living Memorial.
