8.8 Marconi Power Plant (Building 9006)

 Architectural Feature: Building Drainage
 Date: 1998

Current drainage conditions on the south end of the building, including nearby storm drainage pipes and grates, are poor after removal of building 9007, the former King's College gym (Photo Nos. 35 and 37).  The Army had used the Gym, built in 1938, as a metal plating shop.  The building was demolished in 1998 to remove contamination found in soil beneath it.  As a result, during rain storms, water and debris wash into the south front door of the Marconi Power Plant (9006).  To reduce BRAC costs, the Army has not replaced the drainage grates and pipes.  Instead, two channels were cut into the roadway pavement and filled with rocks.  During heavy rain, this stopgap solution still overflows, allowing water to still flow into 9006, causing unsafe conditions for visitors and detracting from the original historic appearance.

Proposed Work

During Phase I, replace storm drains, grates and pipes to prevent flooding; repair damage to the road surface; re-grade former King's College gym site.
