Architectural Feature: Interior Rooms
Date: 1914; 1936
The original 1914 floor plan of the Operations Building have been lost.
A 1914 description of the operation building interior found in the Marconi
Corporation publication Wireless World is contained in the NRHP application.
In 1936 most of the interior partitions were removed to create classroom
space and later divided into dormitory rooms. The only original rooms
left are the men's restroom, a supply room converted into the women's restroom,
the entrance hall and an office (see Drawing 9004/9005). What were
once a wireless operators room for 30 operators, an 'acumulator' room and
the station manager's office is now one large room. The walls have
various holes, graffiti and fire damage. The ceiling is constructed
of poured concrete with reinforcing bars and wire mesh. A hole has
been broken through the ceiling and all electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures
and copper pipe have been removed. Since the fire, all doors and
windows have been covered with plywood secured with nails shot into the
exterior masonry. Once transfer is complete or access is permitted
photos will be supplied. All radiators have disappeared and the concrete
block boiler room addition has collapsed.
Photos: to be supplied after transfer.
Proposed Work
Maintain the floor layout as is. The large room will support
community and school activities much better than a restoration of original
floor plan. During Phase III repair all damage to walls and ceiling.
Replace the heat system with a modern compact natural gas unit placed in
the attic.
