8.4 Marconi Station Manager Cottage  (Building 9002) (Family House - Lt. Colonel / Major)

Architectural Feature: Porch
Date: 1914; later alterations unknown date

The Station Manager's cottage was constructed with an open porch.  The porch covered the center front door entrance and wrapped around the complete east elevation.  The side of the porch was later enclosed with a combination of windows, glass block and dividing wall. The front center is still an open porch with insect screens.  Glass block fills the right most of the three front porch bays (Photo Nos. 151 and 185). The new divider wall is behind the column to the left of the glass block window.   A side window was enlarged into a doorway (Photo No. 190) for entrance to the enclosed porch from the living room.   In the three-east porch bays a set of three six-over-one double-hung windows were added (Photo 153 and 186).  A new exterior door, new stairs and new masonry railings identical to original construction (Photo Nos. 154 and 187) allows entrance from the rear.  Behind the once open pattern brickwork railings are plaster-covered tiles to seal the openings from the elements.  A radiator was added to heat the enclosed porch.  Electrical outlets were added.  The ceiling electrical lighting fixtures are missing.  The porch is in excellent condition due to its solid masonry construction.  Brick columns support the imperial tile covered roof.

Proposed Work

The work proposed for the porch is cleaning, painting and replacement of the missing fixtures during Phase II. Later during Phase III old insect screen should be replaced.
