Architectural Feature: Dining Room
 Date: 1914, 1960s

The Marconi Hotel 50 person dining room, pantry, freezer and kitchen area were converted into one large room in 1941 (see Drawing - 9001 Changes for WWII Radar Development 1941 First  Floor).  Removing the freezers, and walls separating the pantry and kitchen from the dining area did this.  The space was opened to create a "Typing pool".  A corner manager’s office was added.  This office appears to be constructed of salvaged fireproof 'Natco' red clay hollow blocks.  At a later date, possibly during the 1960s, the area was divided into offices with a center hallway (Photo No. 31 and Drawing - 9001 Existing Floor Plan - First Floor) using non-fireproof materials.  The current, 1960s vintage, sheet rock walls show signs of fungus and some sheet rock have visible damage.  Behind the kitchen, is the former kitchen office and laundry room located on either side of the center east wing hallway (Photo No. 32).

Photos: 31 and 32.

Proposed Work

During Phase III, rehabilitate the former dining/pantry/kitchen area into a large multi-purpose space similar in character to the original 1941 typing pool.   This space can be used for fund raising events, meetings and short term exhibits.
