8.17 Heating Oil Plant (Building 9033)

Architectural Feature: Heating Plant for 9032
 Date: 1942

This masonry structure (Photo No. 80) is rectangular and houses two boilers to heat the Signal Administration Annex (9032) and the ramp connecting 9032 to the Marconi hotel (9001).  The boilers are at basement level.  The boiler pipes and auxiliary equipment take up the space from basement floor to ceiling.  A tall square chimney extends to a height of nearly three stories from the west side of building.

Proposed work

During Phase I, service oil/gas boilers and evaluate the possibility and feasibility of eliminating the central oil fired boilers.  The central system would be replaced by individual systems in sections of 9032.  The conversion would take place when funds allowed.  The heating plants could then be used for tall exhibits or other special exhibits.
