The intent or purpose of this booklet is as follows:

1. To promote an awareness of technological contributions 
    by blacks collectively at Fort Monmouth.
2. To promote an awareness of blacks in many nontraditional 
    areas of technology, science, and engineering.
3. To promote an awareness of many high level black men and 
    women, including military who served at Fort Monmouth.
4. To inspire youths, particularly blacks and minorities,
    to consider science and engineering careers by providing role models.
5. To dispel the myths that blacks can only achieve in 
    sports and entertainment.

SCHELL CENTACS DIRECTOR

    James Edward Schell, II, has been appointed as a member of the Federal Senior Executive Service (SES) and has assumed the position of Director for the Tactical Computer Systems Center (CENTACS) at the US Army Communications Research and Development Command (CORADCOM).
    Schell, a recognized technical leader in computer systems engineering and computer science, will serve as technical advisor on tactical computer technology to the Commanding General, CORADCOM, and higher Army and DOD levels. He will direct the CENTACS R&D programs which include the multi-service Military Computer Family of standardized tactical computers and peripherals, diagnostic systems, support software, and software engineering techniques and tools.
    Schell returns to Fort Monmouth from Litton Systems, Inc., California, where he was program director for Command and Control Systems. There he was responsible for the design, development and production of Data Processing and Communication hardware and programming for application in Command and Control systems for military deployment.
    He has received numerous citations and commendations for his outstanding government and civic work and has held offices in professional and community organizations. Schell has a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA., in mathematics and physics and has done graduate work at California State University, Northridge, CA. He and his wife, the former Doris Hunter of West Point, GA., have five children.
